A New (Old) Record
S.G. Goodman / The Savage Radley - Kudzu - Earlier this summer, S.G. Goodman put her first record back on streaming. Released originally under the moniker the Savage Radley, the album is an early glimpse at Goodman’s knack for strong melody, vivid imagery and distinct storytelling. It’s a 2 hour and 22 minute drive from Hickman, KY, to Memphis, TN. So it’s little surprise that Kuzdu is steeped in Memphis’ myriad musical exports; rock n roll, country, blues, folk, punk rock, and more. Dig in below.
An Old Record
Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day - It’s unlikely you would be reading this newsletter right now if we had not purchased this compact disc at Schoolkids Records in Chapel Hill, NC back in the summer of 2003. Thanks to our big brother for the recc, and thanks to Patterson, Cooley, EZB, Barbe and co. for paving the way for folks like S.G., Wednesday, MJ, Waxahatchee, Futurebirds, and all the other artists that sampled the DBT elixir and decided to cook a batch of their own. And to Isbell, who made his debut here with timeless cuts like “Outfit,” and “Decoration Day.” There are amazing songs top to bottom on Decoration Day. Duh. “Marry Me” through “Sounds Better in the Song,” is as fine of a stretch as you’ll find on any album. See you at the rock show soon.
